We’ve all been there—fifteen minutes into an activity and already questioning our life choices. That's exactly how I felt on a trail in the Catskills. It was supposed to be a bonding adventure with my 14-year-old son and my 23-year-old nephew. Instead, it began as a sweaty, heart-pounding ordeal, making me wonder why I had signed up in the first place.
I soon realized that I was not ready—physically and mentally. Thoughts of quitting nagged at me, but a small, persistent voice inside urged me to keep moving forward.

As I stopped resisting, I began to flow with the trail. I heard the birds, felt the breeze, and embraced the still-present pain. It was here, amidst struggle, that I discovered strength.
Reaching the summit, we camped under the stars. A thunderstorm came and went, leaving behind a cool, refreshing air. It was everything I had hoped for. The real revelation?
The best part wasn't reaching the top. It was reconnecting with the challenges and doubts that come with pushing one's limits.
This hike took me back to the early days of my career, reminding me of the anxiety and dreams that once fueled me. Now, as I guide new agents, I aim to instill these lessons.
